Post my Mark Lewin
The one thing that we are very proud of at Marine Surf Lifesaving Club, is our commitment to the development of the sport at grass roots level. Over 6 years ago Barry Lewin, started to nurture 5 paddlers that became the core of a development team that both the club and myself have taken a personal interest in.
We have, with some assistance, acquired craft and equipment for them, and assisted them to get to and from races and trained them to a level that they could participate in the surfski world cup. Sthembiso Mbatha has shown consistent progress and has even had some wins in races in the back of a double ski with Barry Lewin.
With the improved infrastructure at Marine SLC, and further help from various sources, we have integrated these 5 paddlers into our lifesaving program which has seen our squad increase to between 20 -30 lifesavers during the past Summer.
11 paddlers of a broad range in ability, will be put through the surfski series races this season.
The group consists of 10 young guy’s and a very courageous young junior Indian girl, Janiera Reddie, that during the Summer season showed huge commitment, taking part in every training session and taking part in all the regional and national lifesaving events.
In the grading race on Sunday, which for some of these guy’s was the first time they had ever raced in the sea, they all took part despite some nervous reservations about the conditions, and all of them completed the event.
These guy’s can use all the encouragement that you can give them. When you see them at the races, give them encouragement and spare a thought for their commitment considering how far some of these paddlers have come.
Barry Lewin who runs the VarsityCollege SurfskiSchool has introduced an extra class to give the whole group coaching. Marine SLC provides them with membership and a base that they can train and learn from. We at Custom Kayaks are proud to be able to contribute and be part of this program.
Give them a smile and a chirp when you see them on the water. They just love being out there.
