CANCELLED, due to very rough surf. This was such a pity but unavoidable unfortunately. I have said this before, but I really do not envy Billy Harker, who runs the series, when he has to make calls like that. I think it is the first time in a number of years that a race has been called off altogether. He has a number of factors to consider, not the least of which is that a lot of the paddlers will also be doing the World Cup this weekend and a fleet of damaged boats will not go down too well. So we still have not had a down wind race all season so far. Hopefully we will get one this weekend. I managed to get in a very long paddle with our development squad in the shelter of theDurbanbeachfront in warm winter weather but still in flat conditions.
NEW BULLET – I always get excited when we deliver a new full carbon vacuum epoxy BULLET, particularly in funky new colours. We have just finished Barry Lewin’s race boat for the World Cup.
WORLD CUP – It’s here, and the hype is up. The biggest topic right now is a big swell and strong downwind reflecting on our weather charts for this weekend at the moment. It’s too early to speculate as far as I am concerned. The second biggest topic is of course the field. I agree with some of the comments I have read from some overseas paddlers who claim that we should not put tags to any of the World Cup events, like “Best paddlers in the World”etc….. It is safe to say though, that this yearsDurbansurfski world Cup has one hell of a strong field. With the race being shortened, and the promise of some wind and swell, it is going to be a case of “He who makes the least mistakes”. It is going to be a very quick and fast affair. There will not be time to recover from any small error of judgment. The list of names of potential winners is long. I have set my own personal goals although I do prefer a longer race. The shorter distance is a solid flat out blast. There is no time to look at options when you are out there.
The other great thing about a World Cup is the gathering of paddlers from all over the country and from other countries. Roll on Sunday.
See you on the water.
